SUMMARY:Amherst Town Council meeting - with state reps & public comment (in person and virtual)
DESCRIPTION:SOS Amherst invites you to the Amherst Town Council meeting on Monday\, February 2nd at 6:30 PM to advocate for our schools during public comment. \nThe situation is urgent: \nARPS is facing a $4-5 million budget shortfall—close to 3 times worse than last year. This could mean the loss of dozens of teacher and staff positions. This level of deficit translates to a significant loss of services. There are several reasons for this gap that you can read about here. \nThis issue is about priorities. The town routinely carries a $4-6 million surplus while our schools continually face gaps in funding. Over the past decade\, we’ve seen a reduction in town budget from 52% to 47% towards the schools. As a town\, we have resources—we just need to renew education as a priority for our leaders. Representative Mindy Domb and Senator Jo Comerford will also be in attendance at the meeting on Monday\, so we have the chance to share our urgency with our state leaders\, too. \nPlease attend on February 2nd at 6:30 PM at Town Hall (or on Zoom: https://amherstma.zoom.us/j/87605655563) and share during public comment. It’s simple\, describe why quality schools matter to your family and community. Please take a look at our public speaking guide for tips if you don’t know where to start and add the event to your calendar. \nAlso\, consider signing up to be a “point caregiver” for your child’s school or classroom to help get the word out quickly on upcoming advocacy alerts. Listservs are fine\, but talking to fellow caregivers at birthday parties\, sports games\, and at pick up is even better! \nOur children deserve fully staffed classrooms and the programs that help them thrive. \nHope to see you there\, \nSOS Amherst \nNote: Members of the public may attend virtually via Zoom\, by phone by calling phone (301)\n715-8592\, enter webinar ID: 814 9433 7916\, or in person. The meeting will also be live\nbroadcast on Amherst Media channel 17 and https://amherstmedia.org/live-stream \nAgenda: https://amherstma.gov/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/18743 \nMeeting Materials: https://amherstma.gov/DocumentCenter/Index/8154

SUMMARY:Cuppa' Joe with New Finance Director
DESCRIPTION:SOS Amherst supporters needed to attend and ask for SOLUTIONS to prevent school budget cuts. Not minimizing the issues or blaming the schools or the state. They need to know we are paying attention and showing up. \n—–\n\nCuppa’ Joe with Paul and New Finance Director Sean Mangano\n\nFriday\, November 14\, 2025\nCoffee and conversation with Amherst Town Manager Paul Bockelman and Finance Director Sean Mangano. The conversation will focus on the upcoming FY27 budget including revenue & expenditure projections\, potential challenges\, and capital projects. \n\n\n\nSean recently returned to the Town of Amherst after previously serving as the Town’s Finance Director from 2020 to 2023. Prior to this\, he held various roles with the Amherst-Pelham Regional School District\, including their Director of Finance. These experiences give him a comprehensive understanding of both municipal and school budgets\, as well as the complex relationship between educational and municipal financial needs. Sean is eager forward to return to Amherst and contribute his expertise as we approach the upcoming budget season.

SUMMARY:District 5 meeting
DESCRIPTION:District 5 Meeting – Bob Hegner and Ana Devlin Gauthier are holding a District 5 meeting on Sunday October 19th at 10am – it seems to be TBD whether it is in-person or via Zoom but we will update here when known. \nNot sure what district you are in? Check out the map here or look up your address here. District 5 is an uncontested race in this election with Bob Hegner stepping down and only newcomer Sam McCleod and incumbent Ana Devlin Gauthier running. \nDo you agree with one of your current councilperson’s September 2025 comments that we know that we just need to throw money at the roads\, but with the schools it’s “partly a dollar issue and it’s partly we don’t know what goes on within the schools.” Use some Resources to educate District 5 Councilpeople and your neighbors about what is going on with the schools — this information is well known.

SUMMARY:Town Council Public Forum on the Capital Improvement Plan
DESCRIPTION:Town Council Public Forum on the Capital Improvement Plan – The Town Council is required to hold a public forum on the annual Capital Improvement Plan – this plan is the mechanism for distributing the 10.5% of our taxes that is set aside each year – over $6 million dollars – and that is used for physical needs in Town (building maintenance\, road work\, purchase of vehicles). In recent years\, almost all of this money has flowed back to the Municipal Services side of the budget – adding a substantial supplement to budgets for departments like DPW and Public Safety in a way that the schools do not get extra money. That will happen again this year. \nOnce this plan is released SOS will summarize the main issues for anyone who wants to know more.

SUMMARY:Community Conversation on School Funding (in person)
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday April 13\, 2-4 pm at Crocker Farm Elementary School\, Support Our Schools (SOS) Amherst and the League of Women Voters will hold a Community Conversation on School Funding. \nThis is an opportunity for community members to come together to learn from one another about the current challenges around school funding in Amherst\, and to have an open\, collaborative conversation about how we can work together toward a shared goal of sustained\, equitable funding for our schools. Children’s activities and childcare will be available. \nOver the past year\, we have been told “NO” a lot\n\n\nNo – The schools can’t have more money\nNo – The Town can’t change anything about its budgeting process\nNo – You can’t say that you feel Councilors don’t care about our kids because that’s “uncivil”\nNo – You can’t say that education should be prioritized because that’s pitting one need against another\nNo – You can’t have more than two minutes to make a public comment\n\nOn Sunday\, we hope to move past some of these “NOs\,” to talk about why we bump up against so much resistance\, and how we can move forward!\n\n  \nSupport Our Schools (SOS) Amherst is a group of volunteers helping each other to understand issues and get involved in adequately funding our public schools. We aim to increase community knowledge of public school and municipal budgeting\, as well as state funding for public schools\, with the goal of ensuring more equitable funding for our schools. https://www.arpsparents.com \nThe League of Women Voters promotes political responsibility through its Voter Service and Citizen Education activities. Members register voters\, organize candidates’ forums\, publish voting guides and disseminate general information on the legislative process and the function of government on the local\, state\, and national levels. Voter Service and Citizen Education are designed to provide citizens with unbiased\, factual information as a basis for reaching their own decisions.  League Action is based on member study and agreement on selected issues and involves concerted efforts to achieve public policies consistent with League positions. The League neither supports nor opposes any political party or candidate for office. The League is a political but nonpartisan 501c4. The League encourages members to participate fully in the party of their choice as individuals. To learn more go to https://www.lwvamherst.org/. \n  \nParking map:
